Why Is L-Lysine in Boostaro When the Evidence Is Thin?

Quick answer

L-lysine is an essential amino acid and one of seven named Boostaro ingredients. No amount is published. There is no randomised trial of lysine for blood flow or sexual function. Its reputation comes from cold sore research, which also found weak evidence. It is likely there as a partner for vitamin C.

Key facts
  • L-lysine is an essential amino acid: the body cannot make it, so food has to supply it.
  • Its amount in Boostaro is not published.
  • There is no randomised trial record for lysine in circulatory or sexual function.
  • Its supplement reputation comes from cold sore research, where a 2015 Cochrane review did not find good evidence for it either.
  • It has no common drug interactions at dietary amounts, but kidney disease is a reason to ask a clinician first.
  • Boostaro is a dietary supplement. It is not FDA approved, and no supplement is.

What is L-lysine?

Lysine is one of the amino acids, the small building blocks that make up protein. The body can make some amino acids by itself. It cannot make lysine. That is why lysine is called essential. You get it from food, such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy and some beans.

The “L-” in the name describes the shape of the molecule, which is the form found in nature. On the Boostaro panel it is the fourth named ingredient, sitting between vitamin C and magnesium.

Like the other six names, it comes with no weight. The bottle front says 60 capsules and carries two short claim lines. The sales page lists the seven names and stops there.

Why might lysine be in a blood flow capsule at all?

The honest answer is that the material we hold does not say. What it does give is a pair of jobs that lysine does in the body. It is used as a base for collagen cross-linking, which is structural work in the body’s tissues. It is also used in making carnitine.

Vitamin C is the other half of that story. Vitamin C helps with collagen work too. So the likeliest reason for the two to sit side by side is that a formulator put a matched pair on the panel. That is a guess about intent, and we label it as one.

Notice what that reasoning does not say. A job in the body is not the same as a result for the buyer. Many nutrients do useful work and still do nothing measurable when you add more of them on top of a normal diet.

What does the research say about lysine for blood flow or sexual function?

Very little, and that is the point. The ingredients page on this website puts it plainly: lysine has no randomised trial record in circulatory or sexual function. The sources named in the fact sheet contain no trial that tested it for the purpose the bottle describes.

That makes lysine the weakest item on the panel for the goal on the front of the bottle. Compare it with L-citrulline, which has at least one small trial in men with mild erectile difficulty. Lysine has nothing in that space.

Missing evidence is not proof that something does not work. It means nobody has tested it. A fair reader keeps both facts in mind: no known harm at normal food amounts, and no known benefit for this purpose.

What about lysine and cold sores?

Many people have heard that lysine helps with cold sores. This is the source of most of its supplement fame. The fact sheet for this site cites a 2015 Cochrane review of ways to prevent herpes simplex labialis, the medical name for cold sores on the lip.

That review did not find good evidence for lysine either. So the one area where lysine is best known is itself unproven in the sources we hold. We mention it because shoppers often meet lysine through that story and assume it carries over to everything else.

It does not. Cold sores and blood flow are different subjects. A claim made for one cannot be moved to the other without its own evidence.

How does lysine compare with the other six ingredients?

Here is a plain ranking by what the sources say. It is not a score. It is a quick way to see where lysine sits.

IngredientWhat the sources sayEvidence for the bottle’s goal
L-CitrullineA small crossover trial in 24 men with mild erectile dysfunctionThe most direct on the panel
Maritime pine barkA combination trial, and a Cochrane review that found the evidence insufficientWeak and mixed
Vitamin CHelped endothelial function in people with vascular disease or diabetes, not in healthy peopleLimited
L-LysineNo randomised trial record in circulatory or sexual functionNone found
MagnesiumA small average drop in systolic pressure across 34 trialsIndirect
Vitamin K2A three-year trial on arterial stiffness in womenIndirect
NattokinaseAn eight-week blood pressure trial in 86 adultsIndirect

Three of the seven have an indirect link to blood vessels. One has a direct trial. Lysine has none. None of the trials tested Boostaro itself.

Is lysine safe, and who should ask first?

At the amounts found in food, lysine has no common drug interactions in the material we hold. That is reassuring. It is not a promise, because the amount in the capsule is not published.

The ingredients page adds one caution. A person with kidney disease should check with a clinician before adding free amino acids to the diet. The kidneys handle the by-products of protein, and a person with weaker kidneys may need a different plan.

The wider cautions for the product still apply. Boostaro is for adult men aged 18 and over. It is not for anyone pregnant or nursing, and it needs a doctor’s view first for anyone on blood thinners, nitrates or similar medicines. Lysine does not change any of that.

Does a weak ingredient make the whole product a poor buy?

Not by itself. A formula can carry a well-studied ingredient next to a weak one. Many do. The better question is whether the page is honest about which is which, and whether you can check the amounts. In this case you cannot check the amounts.

So treat lysine as a supporting player and judge the product on what you can see. The 60-day money-back window runs from the date you buy. The order desk answers the phone seven days a week. The returns address is printed in the footer. Those things are real and checkable.

If a published milligram figure for every ingredient is a must for you, this label does not meet that bar. We would rather you knew that before you ordered.

Frequently asked questions

What is L-lysine?

An essential amino acid. The body cannot make it, so food has to supply it.

How much L-lysine is in Boostaro?

Not published. The sales page names it and gives no amount.

Does L-lysine help with blood flow?

No randomised trial record exists for lysine in circulatory or sexual function in the sources we hold.

Does lysine prevent cold sores?

The 2015 Cochrane review named in our sources did not find good evidence for it.

Who should ask a doctor before taking lysine?

People with kidney disease should check with a clinician first. Medical questions belong with your own doctor.

Why is lysine paired with vitamin C?

The material we hold does not say. Both are used in collagen work, which is the likeliest reason, but that is our reading and not a published statement.

Plain facts. Boostaro is a dietary supplement. It is not FDA approved, and no dietary supplement is. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration, and this product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Nothing on this page is medical advice. Talk to a doctor before use if you take medicine or have a health condition.

Our view

L-lysine is a real nutrient with a thin evidence record for this product’s goal. We think the fair way to describe it is exactly that: harmless at food amounts as far as the sources show, and unproven for blood flow.

It would be easy to hide the weak ingredient behind the strong ones. A page that does so is not helping you. What we can say is that the whole panel carries the same gap: no amounts, and no trial of the capsule itself.

If that is acceptable to you, the 60-day window gives you time to try it. If it is not, you now know what to look for on any other label.
